I was an aircraft mechanic in the 511th FBS at Langley AFB during 1955 - 1957 then transferred to the 509th FBS.
In those days the 511th FBS used the Buzzard (aka \'Dirty Bird\").

Hi F84FMechanic,
My father, Howard Shewbridge, was in the 511th from 53 - 56 as Hydraulic Specialist.
I was wanting to get him one of the bombing buzzard (dirty bird) patches. Would you or anyone here know of a place where you can get these patches?
I have found embroidery places online that can create them but you have to order in quantity.
So I was thinking that maybe there is someplace that sells them. |

Hi Shew...The 405th FBG consisted of three squadrons, the 509, 510, and 511th. The 511th insignia was the Buzzard. The 509th as I recall was a \"Skull and Rose\"? and the 510..can\'t recall. So your dad was in the 511th with that patch...and probably at one time serviced my aircraft. I was a pilot and participated in operation \"Teapot\" in March of 1955. Our aircraft at the time had the \"Buzzard\" painted on it along with the name chosen by each pilot. My aircraft was named \"Whip City Wagon\" after the Whip City of the World, Westfield, Mass. my hometown. I can\'t help you with obtaining a patch, but, if you would like, I will send you a photo, of me in my plane with the Buzzard on it flying over Big Bear Mountain in California. The shot was taken after returning from a practice mission for one of the \"shots\" in Nevada.We were TDY to George AFB at the time. Tom Stopski f84f@cox.net |

hi! researching my dad who served 1955-1959 Langley AFB 509th FBS - he was a jet mechanic - i believe the patch was skull & rose and am looking for one to order online....could you SO KINDLY assist me in finding anything about the 509th FBS? THANKS SO MUCH!

Karen....I was a pilot with the 511th FBS from 1953 to 1956...your dads sister squadron,along with the 510th FBS the three sqds. made up the 405th FBG which operated directley under TAC Hdqts.
