On the following pages is a capsule history of the 510th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter-Bomber Group, during the crucial period of World War Two (WWII) from the spring of 1943 to the collapse of Hitler's Nazi Germany.  It is a record of the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of those who were the soul, heart and muscle of one of the finest combat units of the European Theatre.

Lt. Robert Griffiths

P-47 Pilot Lt. Robert Griffiths joined the 510th Fighter Squadron in August of 1944. He flew his first missions helping pave the way for US troops to gain ground in Europe. By the time he was flying, the Luftwaffe was virtually wiped out. He longed for air to air combat, but it didn't look like he was going to see much.

At one time in the days before Pearl Harbor, it had been hoped that it would be possible for the RAF to test the Thunderbolt in combat in the Middle East. However, production difficulties caused the British Air Ministry to be informed in September 1941 that it was not a good idea to do this until all the bugs had been wrung out of the design.

The Surrender of Oberst Hans-Ulrich Rudel

 Hans-Ulrich Rudel (2 July 1916 – 18 December 1982) was a Stuka dive-bomber pilot during World War II. The most highly decorated German serviceman of the war, Rudel was one of only 27 military men to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, and the only person to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, Germany's highest military decoration.

Demonstrates the Thunderbolt in dives, loops, slow rolls, Immelman turns, spins, and recoveries, and half rolls. Stresses precautions and proper speeds for various altitudes. Also explains functions of turbo supercharger and water injection systems in high altitude flight.

Describes flight characteristics of the P-47 Thunderbolt, including service ceiling, speed, power, fuel consumption, turbo supercharger system, use of turbo and throttled landing gear and flaps, armament, and switch and control panel. Shows use of the P-47 cockpit trainer.
