F-100 Pilots Zap Enemy Base Camp

Bien Hoa (7AF) - F-100 Supersabre pilots recently struck enemy targets 20 miles north-northwest of Ca Mau, deep in the IV Corps Tactical Zone.

Major Donald J. Campbell, 32, Phoenix, Ariz., and Major Harrell M. Moore, 36, Finger, Tenn., pilots with the 510th Tactical Fighter Squadron, scrambled from the Bien Hoa Air Base alert pad to batter an enemy base camp with bombs and cannons.

"When we scrambled from the pad, the forward air controller (FAC) reported that he had spotted one huge motorized sampen and several smaller sampans docked along an east-west canal," Moore said.

"We dropped our bombs in singles and the FAC made an adjustment after our second pass," he continued. "On Campbell's final bomb run, he scored a direct hit on the big sampan."

After we had exhausted our bomb supply, the FAC had us make a couple long strafe runs along the canal," Moore concluded.

In addition to the large sampan, the FAC reported that Moore and Campbell had destroyed five smaller motorized sampans, four fortifications and two bunkers and damaged three sampans and seven fortifications.
