Lt Boleslaw Kociencki was killed on 22nd June 1944 when he collided head on with a Messerschmitt Bf 109G he was attacking in the Cloyes-sure-le-Loir area. He was known as K-Kid and flew a P-47 with this name on it.

510th pilots Lt. Starck, Lt Kociencki, and Lt Williams were commorated when a plaque to the 405th was unveiled at Purewell Cross War Memorial, Christchurch in June 2002.

I was leading Wainwright Yello Flight when Yellow Flight dropped out of the squadron formation to make a skip-obmb attack on a bridge at Cloyes, France. I made my pass, pulled off the target and called in that ME 109's were over the target. Yellow 3 jettisoned his bombs and manuevered with a 109, getting on its tail, when Yellow two (Lt. Kociencki) turned for a head-on pass at the same enemy aircraft. Yellow two and the 109 were seen firing at each other. The 109 burst into flames and about half of the left wing of Yellow two came off. Both airplanes spun to the ground and exploded. This occured under 1500 feet and neither pilot was seen to bail out.

Boleslaw was the youngest member of the 510th to fly. He was once asked if his Mother knew where he was. His nose art was of "K-Kid".
